With 8 million plus streams to his credit, Berlin-based Producer/Musician Lorenz Schimpf aka LO belongs to that rare breed of artists whose out-of-the-box musical approaches transcend the unassumingly unconventional influences of a small-town native in the postcard-picturesque backdrop of the Schwabian Alps. Bursting onto the scene in the 2000's as an underground Soundcloud prodigy, his swift success and collaborations with some of the freshest names in the industry were but a natural predecessor to his most recent, critically acclaimed solo album 'Night Owls'.I catch up with my former piano-student-turned-college-mate for some laidback reminiscing and perusing on the work-life balance for the music-producer and the anatomy of a music-career in 2021.

Most well-known as Hollywood Celebrity Trainer for the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Charlie Sheen, Rene Russo, and Meg Ryan, founder of Budokon Academy Cameron Shayne is considered the father of the 'mixed movement arts' culture. Currently working on his third black belt in Jiu-Jitsu (where he started his journey with the legendary Rickson Gracie as his first teacher), his unique approaches to balancing the feminine and masculine energies, deep practice of Yoga, and razor-sharp intellect that has delved into years of research towards his practice has set new standards for what is possibly one of the most progressive schools and studies for physical movement today.

The life of Kai Eckhardt reads like one unbelievable series of multiple lifetimes' worth of experiences squeezed into one so far.
Born 1961 in Mainz, Germany to the Liberian '50 cent Doctor' of a polygamist tribe who went on to become the country's President's medical advisor after finishing a degree in medicine from New York City where he'd landed as a stowaway, and a Lutheran-Evangelist German mother who survived the Allied Forces bombings of Nazi Germany as a 10-year-old by sheer chance, only to go on to be shunned by her family and friends for marrying a black man, Kai Eckhardt's contribution to the world of Jazz-fusion is etched into history books as founding bass-player for one of the most important Jazz Guitar Trios of the world with John McLaughlin and Trilok Gurtu.
A career he walked away from to return to Germany to nurse his foster father in his last years while watching him redeem a soul plagued by the conscience of an SSS fighter who escaped Russian captivity shortly before the end of WWII, saved only by the convenient coincidence of not having being tattooed with the symbol due to late enrolment.
All before he eventually migrated to California where he went on to make waves with his genre-bending band Garaj Mahal , and lives in with his partner (now wife) of 30 years with whom he fathers two offsprings.
In this first part of two episodes, I dive in deep with my dear friend and mentor Kai Eckhardt to visit the earliest years of his childhood growing up as Germany's first generation of colored natives amidst the disturbing, heartbreaking yet soul-stirring and conflicted era of post-WWII Germany. One which still employed Third Reich veterans as school teachers and sports coaches and stands testimony to the country's ever-evolving and conflicted stand on its contemporary identity.

Credits and collaborations including the likes of Lucinda Willams, Bill Frisell, The Walkabouts and films "Eden' and "Nightstalker" in addition to composing critically acclaimed ambient music under the moniker 'Disinterested' are an effortless testimony to the rare and sensitive artist who is Matthew Emerson Brown.
Founding member of highly acclaimed dream pop band Trespassers William and the first studio manager and engineer of Sonikwire Studios in Orange County, California, Matthew Browns career in the music business since 1999 in various capacities as artist, producer, composer and engineer represents a waning breed of musicians equally at home in the analog and digital realms of sonic art.
Matthews move to Seattle in 2005 to pursue a freelance recording career saw him join the band the Soft Hills, signed to Hamburg's Tapete Records, thus leading him to Germany where he went on to be founding member with the band Wait Wait. Recently relocated to Seattle, Matthew continues to produce, record and mix and create as member of the Hannah Ramone band.
We catch up after 6 years to talk about the quirks of working between continents, figuring out what a good take is and the shifts the music industry seems to be embracing.

In part two of our conversation, we move onto the early beginnings of Abhinandan's international career, his decision to switch base to Europe longterm and address India's recovering homegrown stigmas and biases about tattooing and the possible role it plays in enabling the cultural appropriation of a thousand year plus form of art.

Hailed by Yale University as one of the 100 most relevant tattoo artists in the world today ('World Atlas of Tattoo') , Abhinandan Basu's journey reads like an awe-inspiring and humbling story of relentless determination, work-ethic and fiery talent winning against the kind of odds the privileged among us tend to think exist in a parallel universe, to set historical, cutting-edge standards of artistry in his field.
Born and raised in a post-colonial refugee community of removed Bangladeshi immigrants qualmlessly categorized as collateral damage to the controversial and poorly executed division of the Indian subcontinent in the historical city of Calcutta, the bitter-sweet reality of his hourly charges for a tattoo today being substantially more than the monthly wages of his fathers 12hr-a-day job meant to provide for the entire family during his childhood, while never lost on him, are events he has only recently started to process and take pride in.
In the first part of this no-holds-barred conversation, we visit our common ancestral city to dig deeper into how it all began.

Singer-songwriter Kiran Ahluwalia writes and performs songs of breakup and love with equal conviction, exhilaratingly mixing Indian music with West African Blues riffs and languid Jazz. The result is a merging of elegance and crispness, all with an easy, inviting charm. Her music is contemporary and fresh, yet still feels somehow familiar.Born In India, brought up in Toronto, Kiran studied Indian music since childhood. Winning two JUNO Awards (Canadian Grammys), over the course of seven albums Kiran has created a style uniquely her own. The beautiful harmonies and addictive guitar riffs of partner Rez Abbasi, and their shared love of trancy rhythms masterfully played on drum kit, tabla and djembe have shaped the songs on Kiran’s latest release 7 Billion (Six Degrees). Both a lyricist and composer, Kiran’s songs speak of cultural intolerance, fighting civil wars within ourselves and realizing female desire by throwing away shame. Her re-working of the classic Qawwali tune Mustt Mustt with the Malian super group Tinariwen has racked up nearly 3 million views online.
